Western Free State

The Western Free State region, next to the Vaal River, is the single largest seed potato production area in South Africa.  The region is on the border to the North-West Province and has hot and dry summers with winter temperatures dropping below freezing.  With good soils and enough irrigation water from the river, the region is ideal for seed potato production.  The two major towns in the production area are Christiana and Bloemhof, both these towns are situated in the neighbouring North-West Province.

Fields reserved for seed potato production are usually planted from December up to February to be harvested mainly in June till end September.
