The province is a summer rainfall region and an important food basket in South Africa.  The area has largely flat regions of scattered trees and grassland.  The North West province is sometimes referred to as the Texas of South Africa, with some of the largest cattle herds in the world found at Stellaland near Vryburg.

Seed potatoes in the region is planted from August until September and harvested from January to February.  The second season for production is planted in January up until March, to be harvested from May to September.
