The town is situated in the Warm Bokkeveld Valley about 170 km north-east of Cape Town.  It was named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, Ceres.

The seed potato production is mainly in the Koue Bokkeveld.  In the region the planting starts from October till December and the seed potatoes are harvested from March up to October.
