A three year Technicon Diploma in Agriculture or Agricultural Degree with Plant Pathology as main subject is required.  When the study of plant diseases was not part of the Diploma or Degree obtained, the trainee certification official can do a module in plant diseases to qualify as a certification official 

All new appointments (trainee certification officials) are subject to ± 2 years of focused in-job training during which period progress is monitored quarterly.  After two years of in-job training and if PCS management is satisfied with the official’s progress, his knowledge is confirmed by completing a practical and theoretical exam.  A percentage of 75 % is required to pass each exam.  After the successful completion of the exams a certificate is awarded to the candidate and he is authorized to work as a fully qualified certification official.
