National Seed Potato Committee

The National Seed Potato Committee is a committee of Potatoes South Africa.  Potato Certification Service was assigned the administrative duties for the Committee.  The National Seed Potato Committee considers matters related to the seed potato industry and identifies the demand for seed potatoes and issues related to the selling thereof.  The identification of research needs in respect of seed potato production is also one of the committee’s responsibilities.  The committee also makes recommendations to the Independent Certification Council for Seed Potatoes with regard to national requirements in respect of the certification of seed potatoes, as well as amendments to the Scheme

The Chairman Seed Potato Growers’ Forum, appointed by the delegates at the Forum, serves as the Chairman of the National Seed Potato Committee.  The Chairman serves as a Director on the Board of Potatoes South Africa representing the seed potato industry.

Johan Moolman Observer Seed Potato Traders’ Forum


The Chairman of the Seed Potato Traders’ Forum attends the meetings of the National Seed Potato Committee as an observer in order to address the interests of the seed potato traders.

When a region registers 2 000 hectares and certifies a million x 25 kg bags for two consecutive years, that region qualifies for a second member of the National Seed Potato Committee.  When such a region no longer complies with the requirements for two consecutive years, the right to a second committee member falls away.
